by Dr. Deniz Kurtoğlu Eken In the year 1996, I had an educational dream...to design a formal trainer training program in my own professional field of English Language Teaching (ELT) and teacher training. This was based on a growing need for ‘teacher trainers’ who could support the development of teachers in their own contexts and beyond for greater sustainability and professional growth in language teacher education. Since then I have been privileged to have worked with over 500 ELT teachers at a number of institutions in Turkey and abroad, most of whom in turn have been reaching out to so many other teachers through different forms of teacher training. We cannot have sustainability without forward thinking; we cannot have sustainability without the motivation to explore and cultivate what is already working; we cannot have sustainability without us, ourselves letting go of our official ‘posts’, clinging on to them eternally; and most importantly, we cannot have sustainability and growth without a professional investment and trust in other professionals with equally great - if not greater - potential, as our successors, whose motivation, efforts and work will hopefully outshine ours. Join me in a session where through the example of a 15-year trainer education program and standing strong, we shall explore key factors which contribute towards greater sustainability and growth in teacher and trainer education.
